Harold J. Bowen, Jr.
Chairman
Harold J. Bowen, Jr., Chairman, after interrupting his college education to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, earned a degree in Economics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1955. He began his business career in Chicago, Illinois, where he did graduate work at Northwestern University while completing the executive training program of one of the city’s largest banks, later becoming associated with one of the country’s leading insurance companies as a financial analyst. He moved to Atlanta in 1961 where he served as a senior investment official at several major institutions prior to organizing the investment counseling firm of Bowen Management Co. Inc., in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1972. The firm was sold to a New York based insurance holding company in 1975, where he was later named Vice Chairman of its investment counseling subsidiary and Chairman of the Investment Committee. He repurchased his company in 1980, subsequent to its relocation as a division to Atlanta. It was renamed Bowen, Hanes & Company, Inc. upon the establishment of a Winston-Salem office in 1981. He belongs to several business and professional organizations, including the New York Society of Security Analysts, the Atlanta Society of Financial Analysts, of which he was a charter member, the Southern Pension Conference, and the Financial Analysts Federation, where he was an original fellow. As Non-Executive Chairman of Bowen, Hanes & Company, Inc., he is a consultant to the firm and serves as Trustee of the Company’s Profit Sharing Plan.
F. Borden Hanes, Jr.
Vice Chairman
Mr. Hanes, a Director of the company, heads the firm's Winston-Salem, North Carolina, office, where he is involved in the formulation of investment strategy, portfolio management, and business development. Prior to joining Bowen, Hanes & Company, Inc. in 1981, he was associated with the investment banking firm of Dean Witter Reynolds, Inc. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Active in community affairs, Mr. Hanes serves on numerous Boards. A partial list includes the following: Vice Chairman of the John Wesley and Anna Hodgin Hanes Foundation, Chairman of the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts, immediate past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Old Salem, Inc., member of the University of North Carolina National Development Council and Friends of the Library Board, member of The Comprehensive Cancer Center Board of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Trustee of the North Carolina Museum of Art, and member of the Board of Libforall Foundation of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Mr. Hanes holds a B.A. degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which he received in 1967. Subsequent to his graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a lst Lieutenant of Infantry.
Harold J. (Jay) Bowen, III
President
Mr. Bowen joined Bowen, Hanes & Company, Inc. in 1986. As the firm's Chief Investment Officer and Economic Strategist, he is responsible for the formulation and implementation of the firm's economic and investment strategies. Subsequent to his association with the company, he received extensive training in economics and investments. He attended graduate school at the London School of Economics, London, England, where, in 1989, he completed his thesis on the international economy. In 1990 he concluded an economic and investment research project on monetary, trade, and tax policy at the Cato Institute, one of the nation's leading public policy foundations in Washington, D.C. Mr. Bowen is a member of the National Economists Club, the National Association of Business Economists, the Atlanta Economists Club, and The Atlanta Society of Financial Analysts. He also serves as a board member for the Fulton County Taxpayers Association. Mr. Bowen holds a B.A. degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which he received in 1984. Mr. Bowen has been a frequent guest on CNBC, The Fox News Channel, and The Fox Business Channel offering commentary on the economy and financial markets.
David L. Kelly, III
Executive Vice President
Mr. Kelly joined Bowen, Hanes & Company, Inc. in 1997 and is involved with research, security analysis, portfolio management, client relations, and business development. From 1989 through 1996, Mr. Kelly was associated with Peterson Properties, a full service commercial real estate company, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. He was Vice President of the Investment Properties Group and was responsible for property acquisitions and dispositions totaling over $300 million. In this capacity, he developed a strong background in financial analysis and asset management involving both real and financial assets. From 1984 through 1987, he was a Banking Officer for Wachovia Bank and Trust in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and in 1987 attended Emory University's Graduate Business School program, receiving his MBA in 1989. Mr. Kelly holds a B.A. degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which he received in 1984.
